Vajda 2016 Northern Marathon Series Race 4 – Brunswick Heads Marathon Sunday June 26
This was a great day of racing on the fantastic waters of the Brunswick River. The day was cool, cloudy but with no rain. Woody Vidgen and the crew from Cape Byron Kayaks put on a great race as usual. The attendance was slightly down on last year.
The waters of the river were still a little brown from the recent flood and there were a few floating tree branch obstacles to make the course interesting. There was little chop. Many paddlers made use of the strong incoming tide and stuck to the channel on the upstream leg. A sharp tideline on the downstream return leg made for a few anxious moments of instability. When crossed this line had a sudden of current direction.
This Brunswick race has been redesignated as Race 4 after the postponing of the Grafton race till Sunday August 7. The next race in the series will be the Brisbane River Marathon on Sunday July 17.
Gerard Effeney has taken over the new point score coordinator of the series. Mathew Mason will be the new date picker for the 2017 series. Both are from Sandgate Club.
