Varsity Lakes was the first race of the Pacific Coast Paddle Series for 2018. What a great start to the new divisional race series, 116 Boats with 121 paddlers hit the water. The Race distances came in at 6km, 11km and 16km.
We had paddlers in 19 Divisions with 4 boats in the Short distance, 55 in Middle distance and 57 in Long distance. The largest groups were M9 with 19 boats, L5 with 13, L4 with 12 and M7 with 11 boats.
There was some close racing, 16km L1 – Daniel Mole in 1:14:08 and 2nd Matt Ogarey with 1:14:15. L5 had a great battle with Peter Anderson 1st with 1:25:42 and Vance Murphy right on his tail with 1:25:52 and coming close behind in 3rd was Graeme Hudson & Delia West with 1:26:06. L6 another close race with Theo Vijoen with 1:29:44 and Janelle Power 2nd with 1:29:55.
In the Middle distance 11km, in M6 we had Ian Craig 1st with 0:57:29 and Fred Tanner & Hugh Stewart 2nd with 0:58:06, M9 another close one, Les Heap 1st with 1:07:27, Stuart Patrick 2nd with 1:07:36 and 3rd Alison Myatt with 1:08:27
It was great to see so many battles within the different divisions across the 3 distances that were raced. After the race, many paddlers commented on how different the racing was compared to previous years and how much they enjoyed the new divisional format.
Even with the patches of rain the day went very well, a Big Thank You to all 93 paddlers who entered on-line, this made our job a lot easier.
Also thank you to all 121 paddlers who came to race and to all the Volunteers who helped out.
As you know we will be looking at the times from this race to help fine tune the divisions, yes we got some wrong, but we had some very close racing.
